John A. Brown, MD
John A. Brown, MD is a board certified, fellowship-trained specialist in arthroscopic and reconstructive surgery of the shoulder and knee, joint preserving techniques and orthopedic trauma. Growing up in the Washington D.C. area, Dr. Brown graduated from James Madison University. He then focused on a career in medicine and excelled; completing medical school at Howard University College of Medicine, graduating 2nd in his class and receiving multiple academic honors including the Charles Epps Award for Excellence in Orthopedics. He further pursued a career in Orthopedic Surgery, completing his residency at the University of Maryland where he had the unique opportunity to work and train with the leaders in the field of orthopedics at both the University of Maryland and The Johns Hopkins University. His thirst for further orthopedic training brought him to Santa Monica, CA where Dr. Brown completed an 18 month rigorous sports medicine and shoulder fellowship at the Santa Monica Orthopedic and Sports Medicine Group where he received extensive, cutting-edge training in knee reconstruction and articular cartilage transplantation as well as the most recent techniques in shoulder surgery. Throughout his career, Dr. Brown has been involved in the care of multiple professional sports clubs, the men’s and women’s World Cup and Olympic soccer teams, as well as Pepperdine University. He currently serves as an Orthopedic Consultant for the Texas Rangers Major League Baseball Club and its minor league affiliates as well as the Arizona Fall League. He continues to serve his community, acting as team physician for three local high schools. Dr. Brown remains dedicated to treating the athlete at all levels. Dr. Brown remains active in academic medicine. He has written and contributed to numerous articles in academic journals such as the American Journal of Sports Medicine and The Journal of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery and textbooks such as Practical Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and Arthroscopy. He routinely lectures on a variety of sports medicine topics to both community groups and academic symposiums. He has traveled both nationally and internationally to places such as Barcelona, Spain to teach the latest techniques in shoulder arthroplasty and reconstruction. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the American Orthopedic Society of Sports Medicine.
